['setlmənt; englisch »Niederlassung«] das, -s, eine soziale Bewegung, die Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts von Großbritannien ausging; zunächst v. a. getragen von jungen Menschen bürgerlicher Schichten, deren Ziel die Entwicklung gemeinnütziger Einrichtungen (Nachbarschaftsheime) in großstädtischen Bezirken war. So entstand 1884 in London Toynbee Hall. In den USA, wo 1886 Stanton Coit (* 1857, ✝ 1944) erstmals den Settlement-Gedanken mit der Schaffung der Neighbourhood Guild (heute University Settlement) in New York verwirklichte, wurde die Settlement-Arbeit (hier Social Settlement genannt) v. a. von J. Addams (Gründung von Hull House 1889 in Chicago) und E. G. Balch getragen.
